"Frindle" by Andrew Clements

7 Ways to Read a Text

When Strong Readers Read, What Do They Do?
  1. Ask Questions
  2. Focus on Key Passage
  3. Grapple with Key Words
  4. Find Connections Between Books and Our Own Lives, the World, Other Text
  5. Summarize Text Down to Core Concepts
  6. Illustrate or Graph Key Concepts
  7. Investigate Background Information Around the Text (Murnen, 2013)

According to Dr. Tim Murnen (2013), "These seven ways to read a novel, short story, or poem, etc. are the foundation of Literature Circles. But really, you don't even have to do Literature Circles with your students. First, teach your students 7 different strategies they can use when they read. Or better yet, first practice these 7 strategies yourself."

Murnen, T. (2013). Bowling Green State University.

To track my thinking across the 7 key roles of typical Literature Circle activities, I will journal my thoughts and what inspires the ways I think and act upon a text when given specific purposes. After looking over a list of classic middle and high school novels, I chose to use Frindle by Andrew Clements as a model for my journal. I will be placing myself inside the roles of each of the 7 strategies mentioned above as I read.
